Q: Why don't I have speech recognition on CyberBuddy?
A. You must have the CyberBuddy Premium to have speech recognition. This is available at theCyberBuddy Premium Page

Q: CyberBuddy stopped listening to my commands. What happened?
A. This is a known problem with the Microsoft Speech Recognition Engine. It doesn't happen too often, but I have seen it occur several times. Other software applications have reported the same thing. It simply needs to be re-installed. The training does not have to be redone when re-installing. To reinstall you can:

  • Find and run and run the file named speechRec_actcnc.exe. This will just re-install the speech recognition engine.
  • Re-install the desired CyberBuddy version. This will re-install everything. It takes a little longer but it won't hurt anything or overwrite any of your preferences.

Q: When I press the listen key. The character does not understand my command.
    A. Make sure of the following:

    1) On the "General" tab of CyberBuddy, make sure the box "Speech Recognition Enabled" is checked.
    2) Go to the "General" tab, click the "Speech Recognition Options" button, then the "Speech Control Panel" button. Select the "Microsoft Speech Recognition Engine" . Click the "Adjust Microphone Settings" button and make sure your microphone is working correctly. The Selection of your microphone can be very important. See this page: http://thecyberbuddy.com/speechrecognition/page12.htm
    3) Click on one of the "Help" buttons in CyberBuddy. Go to the help contents and select "Speech Recognition" and "Speech Commands". There you can see the commands that CyberBuddy will understand.

Q: Can I dictate instant messages or Email.
    A. No. CyberBuddy speech recognition is set up to understand certain commands. With these commands you can do a number of things. CyberBuddy is not a speech dictation program.

Q: CyberBuddy has trouble understanding my commands. Why?
    A. Properly setup, the operation of the Microsoft speech recognition engine is quite impressive. CyberBuddy should work well understanding commands. The things you can do to insure correct performance are to be sure that you have a good microphone (see http://thecyberbuddy.com/speechrecognition/page12.html and that it has been adjusted properly for speech recognition. The microphone setup is in the Speech Control Panel. There should not be a lot of background noise when using speech recognition. Also, on the General Tab of CyberBuddy, select Speech Recognition Options, and adjust the "Speech Input Accuracy" slider for optimum performance. Moving the slider towards the "Least" end may allow CyberBuddy to reject less commands.
Training the speech recognition engine can be important too. When you train the speech recognition engine, you are familiarizing it with the various conditions of your voice. See the next question for "how to Train".

Q: How do I "train" the Speech Recognition Engine.
    A. To train the speech recognition engine, go to the Speech Control Panel. You can get there in one of 2 ways: Go to "My Computer", "Control Panel" and select the "Speech Control Panel" or, go to the "General" tab of CyberBuddy, click the "Speech Recognition Options" button, then the "Speech Control Panel" button.
Once the Speech Control Panel is open, click the "Microsoft Speech Recognition Engine" line. The click the "Training" button. Follow the instructions.
Note that training is most important for programs that use speech dictation. Since CyberBuddy listens for certain commands and does not use speech dictation, a great deal of training is not required.

Q: I get the message: " (Character) is not Listening. Speech Input is not available in English".
    A. I have seen this message immediately after installing the Speech Recognition Engine. Restart your computer.

Q: I get one of the following symptoms: The Listening Character Freezes, The Program no longer hears my commands, Other unexplainable problems.
    A. Reinstall the Microsoft Speech Recognition Engine. I have seen it crash a couple of times on my PC and it required re-installation. The training does not have to be redone when re-installing. To reinstall you can:
  • Find and run the file named speechRec_actcnc.exe. This will just re-install the speech recognition engine.
  • Re-install the desired CyberBuddy version. This will re-install everything. It takes a little longer but it won't hurt anything or overwrite any of your preferences.

Q: When I start the program I get an error message: "CyberBuddy linked to missing export TAPI32.DLL:lineOpenA."
A: This occurs on Windows 95 computers with an old version of TAPI. The solution is to upgrade TAPI. Download and run http://thecyberbuddy.com/TAPI95upgrade.exe

Q: Other Problems not listed here.
